Boundaries of the Underworld

Session Abstract/Description:

It is by now commonly understood that rhetoric and composition studies extends beyond alphabetic and print literacy, yet digital media studies inhabits an underground space in writing studies. We embrace edges of experience to examine underworlds, moving covertly in a realm below and beyond traditional disciplinary activity, engaging ideas relegated to edges. How do ethics, anxieties, fascinations, and fetishes motivate underground activity? We orient toward fresh understanding of communities, subcultures, and social action. We discuss artists and art; creativity and social justice; sexual subcultures and alternative assemblages; privacy, visibility, and identity; and the humans vs. zombies game.
